It depends. If you are talking about a Petition in a state of the US that has the right of Initiative, Referendum %26amp; Recall, then these are legal documents circulated to qualify an initiative or recall for the local or state ballot. They must conform to certain legal requirements. In my state, (California) I believe each signature, in order to be valid, must contain both the signature and the printed name just as it appears on the voting rolls, with the current address.

On some other type of petition.for a non-governmental organization, it depends on whether it is provided for in bylaws or rules of some organization for the right of qualified persons to petition for some action by a board or agency.

In regards to petitions to the US Congress, or your local legislator, or the President, or Departments, since there are no specific rights to an action, it is considered just a request. Of course, we all have the right guarateed by our US Constitution, "the right of the people peaceably to assemble and petition the Government for redress of grievances. " (First Amendment).Whether or not you think anyone really reads these things, or whether it really matters, ....well, I will leave that to your faith in this type of citizen action.
Reply:Of course you do. They're worthless
Reply:Petitions can be power, but in most cases, they just reflect the opinions of a scattered few. Who's to say that a petition is really signed by the recievers constituents anyway? They don't HAVE to be in writting, as a petition isn't a legal or binding article.
Reply:Yes, you need handwritten signatures. Emailed one's can be falsely filled out by anyone, so not considered. I have one about stopping illegal trespassers, you can print, and get folks to sign it. I am doing that. If you want it, please email me, and you shall have it!
